Real Madrid come from 3-1 down to beat AS Roma 4-3 in Rome

Three goals between the 83rd and 90th minutes gave Real Madrid a 4-3 Champions League win at the Stadio Olimpico after Roma had led 3-1.

Real Madrid overturned a 3-1 deficit to beat AS Roma 4-3 in a Champions League league-phase match at the Stadio Olimpico on 14 October. Pacy's match stats show three goals between the 83rd and 90th minutes settled it, after Donyell Malen had put Roma ahead twice.

How it unfolded

Roma struck first in the 20th minute, when Marten de Roon fired from outside the box, assisted by Matías Soulé. Kylian Mbappé levelled in the 25th, his effort from distance set up by Yan Diomande's headed pass. The sides went in level at 1-1 at half-time, per Pacy's match stats.

Malen put Roma 2-1 ahead in the 51st minute and 3-1 in front in the 57th, a goal confirmed after a VAR review. Real Madrid then replied through Carlos Espí in the 83rd minute, Endrick's header in the 85th and Antonio Rüdiger's volley in the 90th. Pacy's event log credits Arda Güler with the assists for the last two, both from corners, and Africa Soccer reports that all three late goals came from corners delivered by the substitute.

Form, the table and the context

Before this match, Roma had won two, drawn three and lost none of their last five games, scoring seven and conceding four, per Pacy's records. That run included a goalless draw at Como on 11 October and a 2-2 draw with Internazionale on 19 September.

In the league-phase table, Real Madrid sit eighth on six points after two games, level on points with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Aston Villa, who each have a goal difference of +7 to Real Madrid's +2. Roma are 25th on one point, with a goal difference of -1.

The occasion had its own history. Per Asharq Al-Awsat, José Mourinho returned to the Stadio Olimpico as Real Madrid's coach and was received warmly by Roma fans, and Roma had not beaten Real Madrid since 2008.
