Ronaldo provisionally suspended as Portugal open disciplinary case

Portugal's federation has opened disciplinary proceedings and provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo over his exit from the national team camp, per ESPN, with no final sanction yet announced.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by Portugal's football federation after its disciplinary council opened proceedings on 9 October 2026 over his exit from the national team camp, per ESPN. No final sanction has been announced, NBC News reports.

The federation's process so far

Per ESPN, the council marked the case urgent and said Ronaldo first faced an automatic provisional suspension, followed by a further suspension. On 10 October the federation said the case had been referred to its disciplinary investigation committee, and that its findings would stay confidential until conclusions were reached, NBC News reports.

Federation rules set the range. According to NBC News, a player who abandons or fails to appear without justification shall be suspended for one to six months, plus a fine. That is the rule's range, not a verdict. The length of any ban is still undecided.

From camp exit to provisional suspension

Ronaldo left Portugal's camp in Copenhagen on 30 September 2026. Announcing the decision on Instagram, he wrote: "I have made the decision to leave the national team training camp," per ESPN. The federation opened proceedings nine days later.

Coach Jorge Jesus had said Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, adding that "the rules are the same for everyone," per ESPN. Ronaldo had warmed up but not been used in Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway, and Jesus later said, as Al Jazeera reports: "Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It's nothing to make a fuss about."

Portugal then won 4-2 in Denmark on 1 October without him. Goals came from Joao Cancelo, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha and Joao Felix, and Ramos started in Ronaldo's place, per ESPN.

Pacy's match stats show Portugal had less of the ball in Denmark, 46.3% possession, but 19 shots to Denmark's 12, with 10 on target to Denmark's 3. Denmark made 6 saves.

Two accounts, one open dispute

On 6 October Ronaldo apologised to his teammates, writing: "I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp," AFP reports via Khaleej Times. In a statement, he also wrote, as Al Jazeera reports: "I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine," and that the consequences "should be assessed and punished by the [federation]."

The statement also went further than an apology. Per AFP via Khaleej Times, it said Jesus had broken an agreement about Ronaldo's minutes and about what the coach would say at the pre-Denmark press conference. NBC News reports that Jesus has not acknowledged any mistake in response.

What to watch next

The next step is the investigation committee's findings, which the federation says will stay confidential until it reaches conclusions, per NBC News.
