Duren locks in five-year, $200m deal with Pistons just before deadline

The Detroit Pistons centre agreed a fully guaranteed five-year contract worth $200 million on 1 October, shortly before the qualifying-offer window closed.

Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons struck a deal at the 11th hour. Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Duren agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract on 1 October, just before the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline to accept his qualifying offer passed. The centre had, per ClickOnDetroit, missed media day and the start of training camp while negotiations dragged toward the wire.

The deal and its terms

The contract carries no team or player options and is fully guaranteed throughout, per NBC Sports. Duren had a higher ceiling available: as a restricted free agent, he could have commanded up to $287 million over five years, per NBC Sports. Instead he settled $87 million below that ceiling, an average of $40 million a season over the five years. The Pistons' final offer came only in the last week, per Yahoo Sports, after Detroit raised its bid from $190 million. Negotiators had also been at odds over a weight clause that, per Yahoo Sports, the team eventually agreed to remove.

The alternative for Duren was less attractive. Had he accepted his qualifying offer—a one-year deal worth $9.6 million, per Yahoo Sports—he would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2027, forgoing long-term security. The $200 million guarantee eliminated that risk, and at $40 million a year it pays him more than four times the qualifying offer's value in each of the five seasons.

A breakout season justified it

Duren's numbers in 2025–26 gave Detroit reason to commit. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 65 percent shooting in 70 games, per Yahoo Sports. Those marks earned him his first All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team, per ClickOnDetroit. For Detroit, the combination of volume, efficiency and league recognition made him a cornerstone piece.

Building a Pistons core

Detroit is assembling its next competitive unit around Duren. Cade Cunningham averaged 23.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 9.9 assists over 64 games last season, per Detroit Sports Nation. Alongside him, Ausar Thompson added 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists across 73 games, per the same source. Thompson also locked himself into the organisation's future: he signed his own five-year, $155 million extension, per Detroit Sports Nation. With Duren now secured as well, two of those three are tied to Detroit on five-year deals worth a combined $355 million.

Player PPG RPG APG Games (2025–26) New deal (years / $M)
Jalen Duren 19.5 10.5 — 70 5 / $200
Cade Cunningham 23.9 5.5 9.9 64 —
Ausar Thompson 9.9 5.7 3.1 73 5 / $155

What it signals for Detroit

The Pistons president of basketball operations, Trajan Langdon, said of Duren, per Yahoo Sports: "He's going to be a huge part of the team." The $200 million bet reflects that conviction. Duren will anchor the middle for years to come, alongside Cunningham and Thompson. The fully guaranteed structure also signals the team's confidence in his durability and growth; there is no escape clause, only commitment. Getting the deal done before the deadline also ends a standoff that kept him out of the start of camp.
