De'Von Achane out for the season with torn ACL as Dolphins fall to 0-3
Miami running back De'Von Achane tore his ACL on his third carry against Kansas City, months after signing a four-year, $64 million extension.
De'Von Achane's season is over. The Miami Dolphins running back tore his ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs on 27 September, per ESPN, and was placed on injured reserve on 28 September, per ESPN. Miami lost the game 24-10, per FOX Sports, and the defeat dropped the Dolphins to 0-3, per ESPN.
How it happened
The injury came early. Achane went down on his third rushing attempt, in the first quarter, when he was tackled awkwardly by Chiefs safety Alohi Gilman, per ESPN. The diagnosis of a torn ACL was reported on 28 September by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter, per NBC Sports.
Coach Jeff Hafley had sounded a warning after the game, saying the injury "does not sound very optimistic," per CBS Sports. He also spoke about Achane himself: "My heart breaks for him but at the same time, I know that he'll be back and he'll be back strong," Hafley said, per ESPN.
A new contract, a short season
The injury arrives months into a new deal. Achane signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension in May 2026, per FOX Sports. It followed a 2025 season in which he rushed for 1,350 yards on 238 carries, an NFL-best 5.7 yards per carry, scored eight rushing and four receiving touchdowns, and made his first Pro Bowl, per ESPN.
His 2026 season lasted less than three full games. Before the injury he had 34 carries for 127 rushing yards and seven catches for 49 receiving yards, with no touchdowns, per ESPN. That works out to about 3.7 yards per carry, against the 5.7 he averaged in 2025.
| Achane | 2025 | 2026 (before injury) |
|---|---|---|
| Carries | 238 | 34 |
| Rushing yards | 1,350 | 127 |
| Yards per carry | 5.7 | 3.7 |
| Rushing touchdowns | 8 | 0 |
| Receiving touchdowns | 4 | 0 |

Gordon steps in
With Achane out of the game in the first quarter, Ollie Gordon II became Miami's main running back against Kansas City. He carried 17 times for 41 yards and scored a touchdown, per NBC Sports, in a game Miami lost by 14 points.
Gordon's 41 yards on 17 carries came to about 2.4 yards per attempt. Those are the only numbers so far on how Miami's backfield looks without Achane, and they come from a single game against one opponent.

Where it leaves Miami
The Dolphins are 0-3, per ESPN, and have lost the player who led the NFL in yards per carry last season, per ESPN, three games into the first year of his extension. Hafley's own words set the frame for the months ahead: a player his coach expects to "be back strong," per ESPN, and a season that has to go on without him, with Gordon the man who took the carries on 27 September, per NBC Sports.
